Zhou Bichang’s Art Exhibition, Five Moon Phases and Women’s Power

Zhou Bichang’s Art Exhibition, Five Moon Phases and Women’s Power
在2019年新专辑《LUNAR》发行四个月之后,11月13日-12月4日,周笔畅与UCCA Lab共同出品的“月相 Lunar Phases”多媒体艺术展在北京UCCA尤伦斯当代艺术中心正式Carry out. This is another attempt by Zhou Bichang to participate in the art field as a producer and co-creator after holding a personal photography exhibition in 2017.In this art exhibition, Zhou Bichang collaborated with five contemporary artists to create, through the artistic interpretation of the natural law of the moon, “Yin Qing Qing Yuan Qi”, hoping to convey female power in different dimensions. Lucia Liu, one of the curators of this exhibition, said that in many cultural systems, the moon phase is regarded as a female phase, and the movement of the moon follows the law and changes continuously in a rhythmic manner, from a deficit to a full cycle, metaphorThe different states, different identities, and the power and meaning of life embodied in the female life process. Before the opening of the exhibition, Zhou Bichang accepted an exclusive interview with Sauna and Yewang and shared the whole creation process of her series of works under the theme of “Moon” this year, which is intended to reflect the power of women. From the album “LUNAR” and the tour of “LUNAR” to today’s “moon phase” art exhibition, Zhou Bichang’s sound system and art system may have produced new echoes. After making the “most satisfying” album, I want to hold an exhibition. “LUNAR”, which was released on July 11 this year, is the third album released by Zhou Bichang in two years.近两年,不止“瘦身成功”、“造型大变”等成了围绕周笔畅旋转的关键词,许多女性艺人也经历着与她相似的命运,“只是我们在讨论‘女性的身体’的时候,The side of the discussion, regardless of appreciation or criticism, is the protagonist of the gaze, while the person being discussed has been staring, feeling the indescribable pressure and demands. And how do women embody autonomy, freedom, and self?Starting from this inspiration, Zhou Bichang found Zhou Yaohui, a poet who is famous for “fascinating” and “gorgeous”, and has always been discussing gender and desire. The two men used the image of “moon” to discuss the so-called fate with the theme of female bodyHow do women encounter destiny, embrace destiny, and even abandon destiny, and ultimately respect and appreciate themselves as women. In the 7 songs included in “LUNAR”, Zhou Bichang and Zhou Yaohui unfolded an abstract and delicate depiction of many body elements-such as “Lying in the Clouds” depicting “ear” listening, and “Half Moon” discusses”Fat” and beauty and ugliness, “Female Stream” touches on the theme of “female physiology” rarely depicted in Chinese popular music.”This is by far the most satisfactory album I have, so that the next album has no idea what to do,” Zhou Bichang said with a smile. This is no longer limited to the birth of the traditional Xiaoqing Xiaoai theme works.Partly influenced by Chen Shanni, a “close friend”, “When she did” Not Typical “a few years ago, Shanni told me that she could look further, because she might feel like doing this in my capacity,It should be able to affect more people. In fact, she has been doing some works expressing social phenomena since the first few photos, so these words of her have given me some thoughts. After finishing this album, I did have a clearer direction of what I want to do later, which is to be more content and more meaningful.”At the beginning of this year, after the birth of the album plan, Zhou Bichang also began to contemplate the” moon phase “exhibition. Inviting five artists to construct the moon phase space female topics How to produce a layered radiation in different media is the subject of continuous experiments in the “LUNAR” series of works. With the assistance of curators You Yang and Lucia Liu, Zhou Bichang found five artists Miao Ying, Tao Hui, Liu Shiyuan, Liang Manqi and Liang Chen, and jointly created five multimedia art spaces, each of which pointed to a certain aspect of the moonAnd correspond to a metaphor of female power. At the same time, the profit and loss of the moon is also presented in the exhibition hall in a dynamic way. Under the framework of the “Bauhaus Architecture”, space designer Liang Chen set up two black and white giant “moons” moving horizontally, corresponding to the moon through 5 spaces. The shape-shaped hollow roof realizes a very oppressive visual challenge like a “lunar eclipse”. The audience walks in a specific exhibition path, that is, in a multi-dimensional space constructed by abstraction and figuration. You Yang said that this design not only constructs the spatial structure of the exhibition, but also changes in light and shadow along with its movement trajectory. It will also become a sensory direction throughout the entire exhibition experience. Based on the exhibition clue of “moon phase”, Zhou Bichang personally took a photo of the real moon phase. From the serial lunar orbits above the city to the close-up of the surface of the moon, the six photos show the three-dimensional form of the moon from far and near. When the camera focuses on the moon, the woman seems to be completing her ritual of seeing herself, and the act of “facing herself” coincides with the will conveyed by this exhibition and Zhou Bichang’s “LUNAR” series of musical works. For the intention of “moon”, Zhou Bichang also gave his own interpretation at the opening scene, “The moon and the moon are actually two different conceptual and rational concepts. The moon is very romantic and beautiful, but if people use telescopes to look at it, the surface of the moon is actually bumpy. However, it is because of years of experience that it can leave these unique beauty.”1[Xiyue]Miao Ying × Zhou Bichang Feminine Wisdom In the first five-minute video work” Aphasia “, Zhou Bichang first tried to create music with” artificial intelligence “.The artificial intelligence program is generated by “reading” a large number of Shakespeare books, lyrics of European and American R & B love songs from different artists (45,000), and the American psychologist Burgess Frederick Skinner’s conditioned reflex academic theory.A poetry style that is both popular and difficult.Zhou Bichang used the “bionic” text written by artificial intelligence to create the melody and sing into a song, generating “Zhou Bichang × AI.”mp3 “.”When I first got the lyrics written by AI, I actually got a headache.Because no matter how powerful a computer is, what it writes is always different from people. What has been calculated is still relatively rigid.Zhou Bichang said with a smile that the artist Miao Ying also wanted her to show a different musical appearance than before. “She hopes that I can be sweeter in this song. This requirement is more difficult for me.””However, Miao Ying revealed that when she got this very typical R & B music that Zhou Bichang composed, she felt very natural. On this basis, Miao Ying produced a low-fidelity picture to deepen the two-sided relationship between human and technology. This video work is named “Aphasia / Aphasia”, inspired by a damage to specific areas of the brainThe symptoms caused by the inability to understand or express language.Patients can speak fluently with people, use correct words and grammar, but cannot fully express the correct meaning. This kind of erroneous answer is not asked, sometimes accurate and sometimes biased, ridiculous but innocent. 2 【宵月】 陶辉×周笔畅 浪漫与幻想 “宵月”空间中,艺术家陶辉的作品《我们共同的形象特别版》,选取了中国影像史上几个具有代表性的节目片段作为作品背景滚动Play. At the same time, the actors stood in front of the screen and reproduced the scenes of TV station news, TV series, variety shows and so on presented in the background, making the virtual and reality superimposed on the cognitive fun. In Zhou Bichang’s part, she chose a very representative scene in her career-a segment of “Relief” during the 2005 competition. In this video, Zhou Bichang now sits next to the TV where Zhou Bichang sang “Relief” in a green suit and a pair of tea-colored sunglasses. The gap between him and his 14-year-old self as a “familiar stranger”.”Some people may feel silly when they see it, but it’s quite interesting,” Zhou Bichang smiled and revealed that the process of shooting this video was very rapid. “I don’t think art is a serious thing. It can also be entertaining sometimes. It depends on everyone’s understanding. Some people may feel bored and do not know what the people in the image are doing. Some people may also have some personal ideas, which I am quite happy with.3[Full Moon]Liu Shiyuan × Zhou Bichang’s multi-faceted “full moon” in the “full moon” space, Zhou Bichang and artist Liu Shiyuan used hearing and touch to construct a very delicate spatial sound installation. There are 8 soft and narrow passages composed of 14 “walls” that penetrate the space. Each passage is one person wide and only one person can walk in.Zhou Bichang created 8 pieces of audio and played them in channels of different fabrics-when the audience first entered the work, they could hear the 8-track audio created by Zhou Bichang playing at the same time, and then the audience would be forced to choose a channel to enter and walk in.You can only hear the single-frequency audio track of the channel, and other background sounds will gradually fade away. For example, a certain channel will gradually leave only the sound of the speech, a certain channel will only have the sound of air, and some will only retain the sound of drums. In the background sound of this work, there is also an English recitation by Zhou Bichang imitating the male perspective and intonation. The letter recited by her was a “space testament” written to the family of Apollo’s moon landing. If the moon landing fails, the letter will be published.Behind this setting is a series of men and women, the relationship between conquest and being conquered, which leads to another kind of deep reflection in the audience. At the opening of the exhibition, Liu Shiyuan said about the feeling of cooperation with Zhou Bichang, “I am now very easy, why is it so smooth? This collaboration convinced me that art is a language, even if two people have not met before, they can communicate smoothly. It ‘s been a long time since I felt this way. Thanks to Pen for bringing me back to this original point.4[Xia Xianyue]Liang Chen × Zhou Bichang’s action force “Xia Xianyue” space is “Distance of the Moon”. This series of works consists of three installations of the same size and different rotation rates. The cantilever is suspended by crystal glass, copper and mercury, forming a light and shadow effect similar to stars, planets and moons in the interlace with neon lights.Artist Liang Chen called this work “a tacit and silent presentation”, while Zhou Bichang shared that this work is similar to the planetary trajectory in the universe, “The universe is silent, so this room is silent.””[Emeiyue]Liang Manqi × Zhou Bi Changxiang enjoy self-consciousness as the most abundant space for sensory experience in the exhibition, Liang Manqi explores himself and the surrounding environment by geometric shapes and colors in “Disguised Space”, presenting the inner uncertainty,Outstanding and antagonistic.Zhou Bichang reproduced the inspiration of the concept of this exhibition in the space. She deconstructed and converted all the tracks of the title of the album “LUNAR”, mixing 7 songs into 1 song. The concentrated work shows the lack of moon phases in the sound.Reincarnation.Zhou Bichang revealed that another ingenuity in this space is that the audience can stand in front of the microphone at the scene to make any sound. According to different sounds, different images will also intersperse in the volume of the wall. ■ Dialogue Zhou Bichang’s experience searched to determine the “like yourself” sauna night net: “LUNAR” album cover is you and a black, black, seemingly very industrial robot, which seems to contradict the female theme conveyed by the album. Can you share the design inspiration of the cover? Zhou Bichang: In fact, it just means that it looks good (laughs). In fact, if you want to set up a reading method specifically, it may fall into the stereotype. Different audiences should see it differently. For example, you can imagine that women are more like robots now? This can also be one of the interpretations. Sauna Night: At the beginning of the album’s first song “Rebellious Muse”, you asked a question “Do you love yourself”, do you have your own answer to this question? Zhou Bichang: I asked myself, I like myself now, but this answer needs to go through a certain search stage. If you asked me in the first few years of my debut, I may not know how to answer. Sauna Nightnet: Now, do you listen to other types of music more often? Zhou Bichang: Recently I have listened to hip-hop a lot. Maybe I still like rhythmic things. Whether I do electronic music or other things, I think I always like to listen to more rhythmic music. Sauna Night Net: The music of the new album is quite “Western”, and it seems to be very suitable for singing in English words.Ever thought about making another English version of the new album? Zhou Bichang: I really thought about it, but it all needs money (laughs). One is the issue of capital, and the other would also like to say, if you want to translate Zhou Yaohui’s words into English, in which direction should you go?In fact, English words are not as particular as Chinese words, and most of them are more popular, so it is still a problem. Sauna Nightnet: Did you go to the UK to study the results of music production, have you recently applied them? Will you want to be a producer yourself later? Zhou Bichang: Yes, at least I have already started to use the software, including the music of this art exhibition, I also made it myself, but it is still too early to be a producer, because foreign producers actually know how to arrange music.I think I will take it slowly! In each process of making an album, I will gradually learn more things.
